Rental Cars & Scooters

There are a good number of rental car companies on Rarotonga and Aitutaki to choose from. However, during the peak tourist season from April to November it is not unusual to find a shortage of vehicles. For that reason we do recommend booking ahead of your visit to avoid disappointment.

On smaller outer islands it is wise to check the availability of rentals with your accommodation provider before arriving. They can usually assist in arranging rental scooters (cars are seldom available on those islands).

Drivers of all vehicles are required to have a valid driver’s licence issued in their own country, or a current international driver’s licence. If you wish to hire a motor scooter and are not licensed to do so at home, you will need to obtain a Cook Islands License. You must pass a theory and practical test at Police Headquarters in Avarua (open Mon to Fri 8am - 4pm, Sat 9am - 1pm, closed Sundays). A total of $40 covers your license ($20) and the theory and practical test ($20). The wearing of safety helmets is compulsory for visitors who ride motor scooters in Rarotonga; this rule does not apply in our other islands.

The following rental companies are recommended. They operate to a high standard and are accredited by Tourism Cook Islands.
