The Rarotonga Sailing Club operates from Sails Restaurant on Muri Beach and most activity is on a Saturday. Visitors are always welcome.
The club is very active teaching youngsters to sail through their Sailing in Schools programme, with most lessons in Optimist class yachts after school hours during the week. Those with skill graduate upwards sailing Bic class and then Laser 4.7’s. A couple of our young sailors competed well recently at the Rio Olympics and at championships in New Zealand.
Seniors meantime, are sailing Sunbursts and Vakas (Tangaroa class) a local outrigger yacht that is pictured above. Occasionally it is possible to hop aboard a competing boat for a sail on the lagoon; enthusiasts will also find yacht hire is available on the beach.
Stand Up Paddling (SUP) has become a popular way to venture onto the lagoon. There are a number of aquatic hire places sited around Rarotonga and at O’otu Beach on Aitutaki that hire Stand Up Paddleboards; some also offer lessons. If you’ve never tried it before, we recommend giving it a go. You will also find SUPs for hire in the early evening with lights to view underwater life and a maxi SUP to cater for a group of friends. Lots of fun!
